The brief was for a flexible open place beach that the family could enjoy in summer and winter.

Simple materials include Stained Shadowclad, untreated macrocarpa weatherboards, laminated pine structure, and pine plywood interior linings.

The house pitches towards the sun and the view with large oberhangs that shrug off the southwesterly breeze, but admit plenty of sunlight for an inviting stay.

Niedermayr Residence

The house faces north and captures sun all day + has views to the valley below.

This is an airy spacious home with five bedrooms. There's plenty of space for the owners, who regularly have family visiting from abroad.

Constructed of cedar + brick, and custom-made macrocarpa trusses with clean off white interiors–a nod to the owners’ Austrian homeland.

This home features an air bridge linking the two upstairs bedrooms. The house is off grid, with PV arrays + solar/wetback water heating connected to battery backup with a hydro system planned for the future.

Sang Beagley Residence

The established suburb of Mt Eden hides a modern new family home designed by the owners’ uncle, Ron Sang.

Developed documentation and design was carried out by Crawshaw Architecture.

This house includes total thermal protection due to the insulated and heated cupolex floor, Insulated walls, roof + thermally broken double glazed aluminium joinery.

Ron Sangs’ details include windows that extend to the ceiling line in all rooms, and a large pivoting entrance door. With no architraves, the wall linings meet aluminium for an entirely sharp look.

Ongley Bridge Residence

A 1960s weatherboard house, a simple classic.

The brief: more room and better space planning. The site was a large urban section, but the new extension had to becarefully placed to allow future subdivision, should future owners wish.

Simple materials include Stained Shadowclad + paintedweatherboard columns that continue the look of the original house and support the large overhanging roof.

The kitchen, lounge, and laundry are now located in the extension, with the kitchen opening out onto the covered entertaining area.

Underground Bunker

Holding a commanding view of the Sugarloaf Islands in New Plymouth, this area witnessed the Battle of Waireka in 1860, so it is fitting that this building holds a defensive dug-in position.

Constructed of precast concrete with torch-on membrane roofing + tanking the roof is covered in 300mm of earth.

Barely visible from the road, it nestles into its position while protecting the treasures within.

McLeod Residence

A new residence for entertaining, this house was designed with in-floor heating, solar water, thermally broken window suites, and insulation that exceeds code requirements.

Cladding is stained cedar with accents of copper on the walls and gutters. This house is state of the art, with high-tech c-bus wiring.

A common theme among Crawshaw Architecture houses is wide eaves, and this is taken one step further with a large covered entertaining area, with glazed roof windows overhead.

Fastier Residence

Designed to accommodate a teenage family, the existing bungalow required more space on two levels.

The client wished to retain the character of the original house.

Whitaker Residence

With a prime location in Beach Street, the existing bungalow was given a complete new look by owner builder Steve Whitaker.

Contemporary was the order of the day, creating a new living level over the existing footprint.

Materials were a smooth render finish contrasted with the classic look of weatherboards.

The kitchen, lounge, and laundry are now located in the extension, with the kitchen opening out onto the covered entertaining area.

Monk Residence

A new homestead on Maude Road for a farming family, to replace the original house.

At the foot of Mt Taranaki, the home nestles into the established gardens taking in views of Ruapehu.

Materials include riverstone, plywood + batten cladding, the interior living rooms use macrocarpa TG+V.

The building envelope is well insulated for the occasional snow fall.
